Finding Ease and Freedom in Illness and Physical Pain

with Oren J. Sofer and Nikki Mirghafori

“What is subject to illness, grows ill. I am not exempt.” This is one of the five daily reflections the Buddha taught. Yet, as human beings living in fragile bodies, when we find ourselves or loved ones ill and in pain, it often feels like a mistake. Health challenges, especially chronic ones, accompany a host of physical and emotional challenges.

How can we work with them skillfully, and find ease in their midst?  How can this universal challenge bring about compassion and wisdom, instead of despair and bitterness. Ultimately, can our condition be a transformational gift for awakening?

The day will include silent meditation in all four postures — sitting, standing, walking and lying down — as well as guided movement, reflection, and dialogue.  Participants will learn practical tools for working with both emotional and physical aspects of illness and the unpleasant sensations commonly regarded as “pain,” as well as how Buddhist wisdom teachings can help us develop more compassion, insight, and freedom.  This daylong is for anyone working with a health challenge, chronic or otherwise, their loved ones, and healthcare professionals. CEs will be available.

Sliding Scale: $75-$200
